Plasters have been used as fire protection solutions for several decades. For example, in many historic buildings gypsum ceilings play an important role in preventing the spread of fire.

Gypsum acts as steel insulation that prevents the spread of heat and flame throughout the structure. Fire - retarding plasters have a significantly lower thermal conductivity than steel.
